the ugly banana

I have noticed a lot of selfishness in myself lately.  I made a resolution to work on that.  And today, I noticed this urge to take the best banana and give the less-than-perfect banana to a friend.  I noticed the urge, giggled at it, and took the ugly banana for myself.

No one noticed.  It was just for me.  But today was not an easy day, so that moment was huge.  Because there was spacious awareness.  There was a conscious choice.  There was freedom.

(Shout out to my dharma sisters in Nepal, who take the ugly banana, on a retreat with over 100 people (and far fewer good bananas), even when no one is watching.)
